Le groupe anglais Coldplay s'est formé en 1996 dans la capitale britannique, à l'University College London, là où le chanteur principal a fait la connaissance de Jonny Buckland. Plus tard, ils ont accueilli le bassiste ainsi que Will Champion, complétant la formation. Initialement appelé Pectoralz, le groupe a changé son nom en Coldplay deux ans plus tard. Leur premier EP, Safety, est sorti la même année, leur permettant de se faire connaître sur la scène musicale. Leur album inaugural, Parachutes, sorti en 2000, a rencontré un succès international, notamment avec le titre "Yellow", qui est devenu un tube mondial.
